Stress less. Use AirTags to save time and money.

AirTags are small wireless tracking discs that work with Apple’s “Find my” apps. They’re intended to be used to locate lost items. You connect them to your account and attach physically to an item. When the item is lost, you can use the app to locate it.

I am not usually the person that loses stuff, so I didn’t give Apple AirTags much thought at first. After learning a bit more about them, I found some pretty smart ways to use AirTags. Here are a few:

Car keys

A single replacement key can cost between $100 and $400 depending on the age and model of the vehicle. Wireless transmitter “keys” especially are very expensive to replace. If lost, you’ll likely need to pay the shop or locksmith to program and possibly a tow as well, making a lost key a pretty expensive mistake.

If adding a $30 keychain means finding your missing key even once, these things are an absolute steal. I’d consider it cheap insurance.

Pet collar

Sometimes Sparky decides to wander off on his own. Imagine how nice it would be to find your dog with an app. Apple hasn’t announced this as an intended feature for AirTags, but it’s a possible use for them.

When  your furry friend passes within wireless range of an Apple product with “Find My” enabled, you can use the app to locate them.

AirTags rely on the signal from an Apple product (doesn’t have to be yours) to appear in the app. If your dog likes disappearing deep into an uninhabited forest you’ll be needing a product designed with that in mind.

Alternatively, if someone found your pet, they’d simply need to hold their iPhone against the AirTag . This will display information you’ve chosen on their phone.

If you’ve ever spent an afternoon locating a dog who’s only interested in where its nose leads them, a device like this could save a LOT of time.

Backpack

My backpack comes everywhere with me, so much that I don’t think about it. It wouldn’t be hard to leave it someplace. Having an AirTag stashed inside might be a big relief if you’re able to quickly recover the bag (and what’s inside).

If you have it tracked, you might also stand a chance at getting it back if someone were to steal it. There are low-visibility tags that allow you to attach an AirTag to a bag strap without drawing much attention to it. Next time I travel, an AirTag will keep an eye on my camera gear.
